ASIA
MYANMAR-BANGLADESH: MORE THAN 100 KILLED IN FLOODING

Asia News report. Heavy rain (34 cm) causes landslides and floods, forcing at least 10,000 people from their homes. Red Cross official says they cannot reach affected areas. Many houses, schools and monasteries were destroyed.

Yangon (AsiaNews/Agencies) – Torrential rains on Monday have caused major landslides and flooding in the border region between Myanmar and Bangladesh, forcing more than 10,000 people from their homes. More than a hundred have died, at least 56 in Myanmar and 55 in Bangladesh.
In northwestern Myanmar near Bangladesh, 34 centimetres of rain have caused major flooding. In Maungdaw Township, 28 people were killed, 18 in Buthidaung. Three bridges were swept away in the towns of Mrauk Oo and Kyauk Taw, and homes built on slopes were washed away.
A Red Cross official said that reaching the disaster area was very difficult because of damages to the roads. The Buthidaung-Maungdaw road, which connects Myanmar to Bangladesh, was blocked by a landslide for 17 hours.
Many houses, schools and monasteries were destroyed. Food is in short supply and there is no power.
Large-scale flooding is typical of this time of the year, when monsoon rains begin at the end of May, but deforestation has caused major soil erosion and increased the frequency and severity of landslides when rains are heavy.

AFRICA
KENYA: CHURCH LEADERS QUESTION GOVERNMENT ON DEATHS AT RALLY

All Africa report: Church leaders in Kenya have said they are holding the government responsible for two explosions at a constitution prayer rally in Nairobi, in which seven people died and nearly 100 were injured on 13 June.

The church leaders, who have been campaigning for a "No" vote against a proposed draft constitution, condemned the attack as an affront to the Christian faith, and sent their condolences to the families of those who had died.
"Having been informed over and over that the passage of the new constitution is a government project, we are left with no doubt the government, either directly or indirectly, had a hand in this attack. Who else in this country holds explosives?" said the Rev. Peter Karanja, general secretary of the National Council of Churches of Kenya.
"We therefore hold the government and the "Yes" team responsible for the attack and the blood that was shed, unless they prove to Kenyans that someone else planted and detonated the devices," said Karanja on 14 June.
The rally, organized by senior Evangelical and Pentecostal church leaders to pray for the rejection of the draft constitution, had gone peacefully until the explosions took place shortly before the event was due to end.
"It is very unfortunate this has happened but we stand firm and refuse to be intimidated," Bishop David Oginde of the Nairobi Pentecostal Church told journalists soon after the blast.
Thousands of Christians had danced and sung, and were praying when the first of the explosions took place at about 7.00 p.m. at Uhuru Park in the centre of Nairobi.
"We condemn this attack in the strongest terms. I want to let Kenyans know Christians have won," said Pastor James Ng'ang'a, the leader of Neno Evangelism, a large Pentecostal church.
The draft constitution will face a referendum on 4 August but the issue has split the country between the majority Christians and minority Muslims. Christian leaders reject the draft because it entrenches Kadhis, as Islamic courts are known. They also say the proposed constitution will legalise abortion and reduce freedom of worship.
The government says it wants the document accepted but Christian leaders and some politicians have warned the authorities not to force it on the people.
"We are being asked to pass this constitution hurriedly but take time and ask yourselves why they are pushing us to speedily pass the new law," said Bishop Mark Kariuki of the Life Celebration Centre at the rally.
The leaders are also questioning what they see as U.S. interest in the draft after, they say, American Vice-President Joe Biden endorsed the draft.
"What is it in this new constitution that has attracted Americans until their VP says pass this law and we will give you money for investment," said Bishop Kariuki.
The BBC reported on 14 June that, after an emergency security meeting, Prime Minister Raila Odinga had confirmed it had been a grenade attack and said a top police team was investigating it. Previously, Odinga had said it was an isolated case that should not be linked to the referendum. Christian leaders responded by continuing to accuse those supporting the law of carrying out the attack on them.

AUSTRALIA
CARDINAL PELL ORDAINS 6 MEN TO THE PRIESTHOOD AT CATHEDRAL

Cath News report: Cardinal George Pell has ordained six men to the priesthood at StMary's Cathedral, representing the largest group of ordinands in Sydney since 1983.

The newly ordained priests - Fr Nen Dang (56), Fr Robert Doohan (47), Fr Joseph Gedeon (37), Fr Kim Ha (36), Fr Andrew James (36) and Fr Joseph Guinea (31) - will all serve the Church in the Archdiocese of Sydney.

The ordinations took place on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart, the last major feast in the year for priests, said a report from the archdiocese. In his homily during the Ordination Mass, Cardinal Pell spelled out the attributes required of a priest - that they need to be "strong, wise and compassionate" and that they need to "do the hard things that their people need them to do."

He also noted the huge population increases expected in the Archdiocese of Sydney and appealed passionately to young men in the congregation: "We need help!" ... "there have to be young men here tonight thinking about becoming a priest. Come! Step forward!"
He also urged young women to step forward and enquire about a vocation to the religious or consecrated life http://www.cathnews.com/article.aspx?aeid=22011

EUROPE
FRANCE: 3RD ANNUAL "PRIEST CUP" GO-KART COMPETITION

Rome reports news: This route near Paris has hosted a unique event: 72 priests have participated in the 'Priest Cup', a a competition of go-karts driven by priests and with an ending of solidarity.

With this race the priests want to humanize the motor world and, over all, demonstrate that priests are also good with speed.
Only priests under age 40 participated. It started with a blessing and ended with food and of course with Mass.
Fr. Rémy Soubrier
Third Place 'Priest Cup'
“The initiative was started with the objective of sharing a joyous day together and to get rid of tension.”
Fr. Thomas Chapuis
Participant
“The first objective is to renew the unin and friendship among us, the second is to make an act of solidarity, because with each lap on the road one euro is donated to each association. And then there is an evangelical objective to show an individual face of the priesthood."
This was the third edition of the race. But this one includes some new things. For the first time, priests from all over France participated.
Abbé Cyril Gordien
Organization member
“It's the first time the media covers this race because we want to share our joy of being young priests in France with those who do not know us.”The other beneficiaries of this race are organizations who receive a euro for each lap: Cáritas, the Anak association, dedicated to infants and the foundation Jérome Lejeune in favor of life.
The winner of the race also gave half of his earnings to these organizations.
For hours these priests enjoyed imitating Schumander, Alonso or Hamilton and in another way had fun at the podium.

AMERICA
USA: ROSARIES FOR PRIESTS ON JUNE 19 TO COMMEMORATE YEAR OF PRIEST

Catholic Exchange report: Have you heard about the Rosary for Priests? People will be gathering on the steps of Cathedrals in many dioceses on June 19 at 10am, to offer a Rosary for priests to commemorate the last day of the Year for Priests. While last Friday was the ceremonial ending, the indulgences are available until June 19. And on top of that, it is Father’s Day weekend — what more fitting time could there be to pray for our spiritual Fathers?

This independent and spontaneous prayer initiative for priests was started by a small group of lay faithful in San Francisco, with the approval of the Archdiocese, and it is catching on. At least three other California dioceses have approved these gatherings and the list is growing.
“This is not a political act, or act of advocacy. It is a spiritual act; an act of love and support for our Reverend Fathers,” said Rosary for Priests committeeman Cyrus Johnson. “The best thing you can do for a person, including yourself, is prayer. This is most fitting for our priests who do so much for us. We wish to make a public declaration of appreciation as the laity.”
The idea is simple, and maybe that’s why it’s catching on. Rosary for Priests has been notified of simultaneous prayer rallies at the cathedrals of the following dioceses: San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, and Sacramento, and inquiries have arrived from as far away as Germany, France and Indonesia. The San Francisco-based group is not doing the organizing for any other dioceses, but is offering free flyers, promotional materials and event listings on the RosaryForPriests.org website.
The Rosary for Priests team encourages the faithful in other dioceses to request permission to hold Rosary for Priests prayer gatherings at their own Cathedrals, and invite as many people as possible to join together in prayer. Simply let your Cathedral know you would like to gather to pray for 30 minutes, with no other purpose than to pray for those good men who have offered their lives in the service of Christ and His Church.
More details, as well as recommendations for organizing your own Rosary for Priests, can be found on their website at http://www.rosaryforpriests.org/
If you can’t attend a Rosary for Priests event or get to your cathedral on Saturday, please show your unity with those who are attending these events — and your love for our priests — by praying a Rosary with us at 10 a.m.

TODAY´S SAINT

St. Avitus

ABBOT
Feast: June 17
Information: Feast Day: June 17
Died: 530
ST. AVITUS was a native of Orleans, and, retiring into Auvergne, took the monastic habit, together with St. Calais, in the abbey of Menat, at that time very small, though afterward enriched by Queen Brunehault, and by St. Boner, Bishop of Clermont. The two Saints soon after returned to Miscy, a famous abbey situated a league and a half below Orleans. It was founded toward the end of the reign of Clovis I. by St. Euspicius, a holy priest, honored on the 14th of June, and his nephew St. Maximin or Mesnim, whose name this monastery, which is now of the Cistercian Order, bears. Many call St. Maximin the first abbot, others St. Euspicius the first, St. Maximin the second, and St. Avitus the third. But our Saint and St. Calais made not a long stay at Miscy, though St. Maximin gave them a gracious reception. In quest of a closer retirement, St. Avitus, who had succeeded St. Maximin, soon after resigned the abbacy, and with St. Calais lived a recluse in the territory now called Dunois, on the frontiers of La Perche. Others joining them, St. Calais retired into a forest in Maine, and King Clotaire built a church and monastery for St. Avitus and his companions. This is at present a Benedictine nunnery, called St. Avy of Chateaudun, and is situated on the Loire, at the foot of the hill on which the town of Chateaudun is built, in the diocese of Chartres. Three famous monks, Leobin, afterwards Bishop of Chartres, Euphronius, and Rusticus, attended our Saint to his happy death, which happened about the year 530. His body was carried to Orleans, and buried with great pomp in that city.

TODAY´S GOSPEL

Matthew 6: 7 - 15

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
7 "And in praying do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their many words.

8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

9 Pray then like this: Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven.

11 Give us this day our daily bread;

12 And forgive us our debts, As we also have forgiven our debtors;

13 And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil.

14 For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you;

15 but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
