VATICAN:
POPE OFFERS CONDOLENCES ON DEATH OF MALTESE FORMER PRESIDENT

Radio Vaticana report: Pope Benedict XVI has sent a telegram of condolences to the people of Malta on the death of former President Guido de Marco.

The message was issued on behalf of the Holy Father by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Secretary of State of the Holy See. It was read during the Mass praesente cadavere at St John's Co-Cathedral Monday afternoon.

The Pope had received Prof and Mrs de Marco when he visited Malta in April.

Addressed to Archbishop Paul Cremona, the telegram reads: "His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Professor Guido de Marco, former President of Malta, and he sends prayerful condolences to Mrs de Marco, to the family, and to all who mourn the loss of this fine statesmen.

"His Holiness recalls with esteem the deceased's significant contribution not only the domestic affairs of the Maltese nation, which he served for many years with great distinction, but to the life of the international community, especially during his term of office as President of the General Assembly of the United Nations.

"Mindful of the deceased's clear and constant witness to his faith in Christ in the conduct of political life, the Holy Father prays that many who serve in public office will draw inspiration from his example.

"His Holiness joins all who are gathered for the solemn funeral rite in commending Professor de Marco's soul to the merciful love of our heavenly Father, and as a pledge of spiritual strength and comfort, he willingly imparts his Apostolic Blessing to the de Marco family and to the entire nation."

Prof de Marco died Thursday Aug 13th after suffering a heart attack at his home. He was 79 years old.

ASIA: IRAQ: SUICIDE ATTACK KILLS 41 AND WOUNDS 100

Asia News report: Over 100 wounded. Crowded street close to army recruiting centre targeted. 5 months on from elections, talks for a possible national unity government still blocked. Al-Maliki’s obstacles.

Baghdad (AsiaNews / Agencies) - At least 41 people were killed in a suicide attack this morning on a recruitment centre for the army. The explosion which occurred in central Baghdad, also wounded more than 100 people. The attack targeted a very densely populated, near a bus station.
Violence in Iraq has risen sharply in the month of July, but has not reached the heights of recent years.
The attack takes place one day after the suspension of talks on the future government. The elections in March gave a winner, but only slightly, the al-Iraqiya group, led by secularist Iyad Allawi, against the Shi'ite bloc led by former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. Dialogues and meetings have failed to build a coalition that has majority in parliament. The United Nations and church figures have suggested a government of national unity, but al-Maliki seems to want to hinder the change over to Allawi at all costs.
Local sources tell AsiaNews, that the insecurity caused by lack of government, is strengthening extremists and criminal gangs.

AMERICA:
USA: ACTOR MCDONOUGH FIRED FOR REFUSING SEX SCENES NOW IN NEW SERIES

LifeSiteNews.com report: – Standing up for his religious and moral beliefs has paid off for Neal McDonough, Hollywood actor and family man, who was fired back in March from a television series for refusing to perform steamy sex scenes. Far from ending his career, the actor’s career is moving along with a role in a major Hollywood film and the lead in a new television series called “Vigilante Priest.”

Although the dominant attitude in Hollywood regarding sex scenes is that “everybody’s doing it,” Nikki Fink of Deadline.com reported that McDonough lost his role in ABC’s TV series “Scoundrels” by not caving into demands from ABC executives on Day 3 of shooting that he perform a sex scene with Virginia Madsen.
McDonough said “no,” saying that would violate his Catholic faith and his role as a husband and father, which he takes seriously. He is married with three children. For that stand, Fink said McDonough may have lost as much as $1 million in pay.
Besides playing Buck Compton in “Band of Brothers,” McDonough has performed in the series “Desperate Housewives” and “Boomtown” - but again, his characters stayed clear of sex scenes.
Fink reports that while McDonough has lost job opportunities for his stand, he is now producing the pilot for a one hour drama on the Starz channel about an ex-cop turned Catholic priest. McDonough plays the title role and his character, reportedly, takes an unconventional approach when it comes to cleaning up the crime ridden streets of Los Angeles “one sinner at a time.”
Starz is fast-tracking the project, which will have Walon Green from Law & Order as an executive producer and writer. Depending on the success of the pilot, it could turn into a new show for McDonough.
McDonough is also co-starring in Marvel Comic’s film production of “Captain America” as Dum Dum Dugan, an agent of the fictional international espionage and law enforcement agency SHIELD. Dugan is known in the Marvel comics universe for his trademark bowler and excellent marksmanship. The movie is currently being filmed in London, and is scheduled for theatrical release in July 2011.
McDonough has acted in several movies, including Star Trek: First Contact, Minority Report and The Hitcher.
For McDonough there is a bitter-sweet irony in the whole situation – while ABC execs may have forced him to walk off the set of “Scoundrels,” the life-expectancy of the show is looking very short, after just eight episodes. The summer television drama fizzled with last night’s finale brining in just 2.84 million viewers, which Broadcasting & Cable news reported as a 38 percent audience drop from its June premiere. It is not expected to run another season.

AFRICA: UGANDA: ARCHBISHOP ORDAINS 9 PRIESTS AND 11 DEACONS-

All Africa report: The Archbishop of Kampala Archdiocese, Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, has warned Catholics against burdening the newly ordained clergy, saying this would affect their work.

Lwanga said many parishioners ask the clergy for financial assistance, yet they do not earn a salary. "Don't burden these newly-ordained priests and deacons by asking them for school fees," Lwanga said.
The parishioners, he said, should instead contribute to the wellbeing of the clergy who carry out a selfless service. He was speaking at the ordination of priests and deacons at Rubaga Cathedral on Saturday. Nine clergymen were ordained priests, while 11 became deacons.
Speaking on behalf of the newly-ordained priests, the Rev. Father Moses Musooka of Rubaga parish, asked the serving clergy not to look at the new ones as rivals. "In case we make mistakes, do not condemn us. We have not come to usurp your powers, but to serve God's people," he said.

EUROPE: HUNGARY SKATEBOARDING PRIESTS GAINS MEDIA ATTENTION

Cath News report: Footage of a Hungarian priest's skateboarding skill has become a YouTube hit. The Reverend Zoltan Lendvai, 45, believes it helps him spread the Word to young people.
Fr Lendvai, who lives and preaches in Redics, a small village on Hungary's border with Slovenia, is featured in the video, Funny Priest Skateboarding, said a Reuters report on SBS.
The original video has, at the time of writing, drawn more than 180,000 hits. The footage has also been set to music on YouTube. Fr Lendvai says he follows the ways of Saint John Bosco, an Italian priest and educator in the 19th century who dedicated his life to improving the lot of poor youngsters and used games as part of their education, according to the report.
"Many times I have felt that this is the way I can bring many people a bit closer to Jesus," he told Reuters.
He said three boys aged between 16 and 18 who had never attended church before started coming regularly after he showed them a few skateboard tricks.
His first board bore the papal coat of arms and he has since given away at least six to his young parishioners.

TODAY'S SAINT

St. Hyacinth

DOMINICAN MISSIONARY
Feast: August 17
Information: Feast Day: August 17
Born: 1185 at Lanka Castle, Kamin, Silesia, Poland
Died: 15 August 1257 at Krakow, Poland
Canonized: 17 April 1594 by Pope Clement VIII
Patron of: Poland
Dominican, called the Apostle of the North, son of Eustachius Konski of the noble family of Odrowaz; born 1185 at the castle of Lanka, at Kamin, in Silesia, Poland (now Prussia); died 15 August, 1257, at Cracow. Feast, 16 Aug. A near relative of Saint Ceslaus, he made his studies at Cracow, Prague, and Bologna, and at the latter place merited the title of Doctor of Law and Divinity. On his return to Poland he was given a prebend at Sandomir. He subsequently accompanied his uncle Ivo Konski, the Bishop of Cracow, to Rome, where he met St. Dominic, and was one of the first to receive at his hands (at Santa Sabina, 1220) the habit of the newly established Order of Friars Preachers. After his novitiate he made his religious profession, and was made superior of the little band of missionaries sent to Poland to preach. On the way he was able to establish a convent of his order at Friesach in Carinthia. In Poland the new preachers were favourably received and their sermons were productive of much good. Hyacinth founded communities at Sandomir, Cracow, and at Plocko on the Vistula in Moravia. He extended his missionary work through Prussia, Pomerania, and Lithuania; then crossing the Baltic Sea he preached in Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. He came into Lower or Red Russia, establishing a community at Lemberg and at Haletz on the Mester; proceeded into Muscovy, and founded a convent at Dieff, and came as far as the shores of the Black Sea. He then returned to Cracow, which he had made the centre of his operations. On the morning of 15 August he attended Matins and Mass, received the last sacraments, and died a saintly death. God glorified His servant by numberless miracles, the record of which fills many folio pages of the Acta SS., August, III, 309. He was canonized by Pope Clement VIII in 1594. A portion of his relics is at the Dominican church in Paris. SOURCE- EWTN.COM

TODAY'S GOSPEL

Matthew 19: 23 - 30

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
23 And Jesus said to his disciples, "Truly, I say to you, it will be hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.

24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

25 When the disciples heard this they were greatly astonished, saying, "Who then can be saved?"

26 But Jesus looked at them and said to them, "With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."

27 Then Peter said in reply, "Lo, we have left everything and followed you. What then shall we have?"

28 Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of man shall sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

29 And every one who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name's sake, will receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life.

30 But many that are first will be last, and the last first.
