ASIA: INDIA: INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR NON-VIOLENCE
AsiaNews REPORT –Father Nithiya believes the whole world should embrace the message of peace promoted by Mahatma Gandhi. The need to look to the poor and needy, because only with the development of the least can a just and tolerant society be achieved.Today is the International Day of Non-Violence, which coincides with the anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi. According to the United Nations General Assembly resolution of 15 June 2007, the anniversary is an occasion to "disseminate the message of nonviolence, including through education and public awareness". Governments and NGOs mark the day by promoting these principles through meetings, seminars, exhibitions and public lectures.Fr. Nithiya OFM (Cap), executive secretary of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences (FABC) Office of Human Development, spoke to AsiaNews about the relevance of the Gandhi’s message for India today:"Unfortunately, most of the rich live of violence and weapons. India is the second largest importer of weapons in the world, and does not invest in dialogue and peace initiatives.Every day the news and media are full of talk of violence. Schools and universities do not have peace, and India as a whole is becoming a violent country, particularly against the poor, the marginalized, indigenous peoples who are denied their right to food, water and land. Women are still not free, either at home or in public. There is a long way to go to learn tolerance and nonviolence. This year the Day for Nonviolence focuses on the rural peoples and villages, but right now more attention is paid to the cities and industries. Thousands of villages are without electricity, without water supply, roads and health centres.Gandhi spoke of Sarvodaya, a society that is able to guarantee the well-being of all citizens, with equal economic, political, civil and socio-cultural rights. Rights that are violated today when it comes to poor and marginalized. The India of today is not the one Gandhi dreamed of, but his message is still true today, and every decision we make must include and involve the most needy. Here I am not only speaking of India, but Asia as a whole, the meeting point of different cultures, traditions and religions. Today more than ever we need to accept and spread the message of the Mahatma: to India, Asia, and throughout the world. "

EUROPE - NEW OBSERVATORY ON DISCRIMINATION AGAINST CHRISTIANS
Agenzia Fides –New Observatory on Intolerance and Discrimination Against Christians in Europe formedThe birth of an Observatory on Intolerance and Discrimination Against Christians in Europe Demographics and the Family in Europe was announced yesterday afternoon (September 30), by Cardinal Peter Erdo, Archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest and President of the CCEE (Council of European Bishops' Conferences), in his opening speech at the CCEE Plenary Assembly, being held in Zagreb from September 30 to October 3, on "Demographics and the Family in Europe."“Europe, this continent in which many cultures have found the Gospel, and from where so many missionaries have set out to proclaim the Word to the ends of the earth, is today experiencing an identity crisis. And this crisis does not only affect our individual nations, but it also touches upon the plan for a community of Europe,” said Cardinal Erdo in his opening speech. Today there are plenty of groups who seek to “deny the existence of God at all costs,” thus denying the possibility of founding life and social structures on a solid foundation. However, “Europe needs God, to recall its own roots and therefore to look to the future with realism and hope. Unfortunately, the situation is not easy for Christians who try to bear witness to their faith and hope in their lives, in a lifestyle that often becomes a challenge for others.”The President of the CCEE also announced the birth of an "Observatory on Intolerance and Discrimination Against Christians in Europe," which aims to "promote greater awareness of the forms of intolerance and discrimination which some Christians in Europe suffer.” He continued: "This observatory does not aim to be a tool for disputes, but an aid to create a society more respectful of religious freedom, more capable too of understanding and accepting both its own roots and the plural reality through a healthy secularism. In short, it is, on the one hand, a help to modern evangelization, and, on the other, a help to the development of an authentic democracy based on equality in our continent. True religious freedom – as John Paul II says – is a fundamental right and sets the standard for the observation of all the other rights. Where hate campaigns are permitted against a certain religious community or an ethnic group, tomorrow it will be permitted against another group.”In the telegram sent on behalf of the Holy Father Benedict XVI, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Secretary of State, encouraged the prelates "to continue the important work undertaken and inspire in the Church communities the necessary commitment so that the faithful might be free from intolerance and discrimination and to promote the family and the defense of human life." The Pope also assured the participants of his prayers "so that the providential meeting may contribute to strengthening the bonds of unity and communion between the European bishops giving a further courageous thrust to the new evangelization of the continent." http://www.fides.org/aree/news/newsdet.php?idnews=27520&lan=eng

AMERICA: USA: ARCHBISHOP ASKS ALL TO PARTICIPATE IN RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY
CNA report: Anchorage Archbishop Roger Schwietz is urging Alaskans to celebrate “Respect Life Sunday” on Sunday, Oct. 3 – an annual, nationwide commemoration to help bring Catholic Church teaching on the value and dignity of human life to the Catholic community and public at large. In the debates over the treatment of human life, there are “signs of hope,” Archbishop Schwietz told the Catholic Anchor. “The hearts of people are changing,” he said, “and especially young people are seeing the reality that human life does begin at conception.”Indeed, recent national polls show increasing opposition to abortion and federally funded embryo-destructive stem cell research. But “what’s more worrisome is the end-of-life issues,” he cautioned, as certain groups continue pushing for euthanasia and assisted suicide. In fact, Alaska’s nearest neighbors, Oregon and Washington, both have laws allowing physicians to prescribe lethal doses of drugs to end patients’ lives. And the practice of withdrawing assisted nutrition and hydration from patients who cannot feed themselves is commonplace in many areas. In the face of the current “challenge,” Archbishop Schwietz recommended the diocese’s Catholics pray that all human lives are respected, from conception to natural death. And he added that Respect Life Sunday is a good opportunity for Catholics to “reflect on the need for us to be people who bring the truth to our society, as a people of faith.”Begun in 1972, the Respect Life Sunday project is sponsored by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and observed in virtually all of the 195 Catholic dioceses in the U.S.This year’s theme is, “The measure of love is to love without measure.” To encourage all to “heroic” love of the most defenseless members of the human family, the USCCB has prepared Respect Life Sunday bulletin inserts, posters, prayer intentions, a liturgy guide, preaching reflections and brochures.Among other issues of pro-life import, the materials address end-of-life care, population control and morally permissible treatments for infertility. The brochures explain why assisted nutrition and hydration are natural means of preserving life, not a medical “treatment;” why population growth is a “driver,” not a hindrance of progress; and how infertility can be addressed in morally sound ways. This year’s liturgy guide offers intercessions for life, a Litany for Life, a prayer, enthronement and novena to Our Lady of Guadalupe, as well as suggested preaching reflections for Respect Life Sunday and January 22, the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion on demand in the United States.Archbishop Schwietz plans to disseminate links to the bishops’ online materials to all 32 parishes of the Anchorage Archdiocese. They may be downloaded — in English or Spanish – from the Web site of the bishops’ Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities, at usccb.org/prolife/programs/rlp http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/archbishop-urges-alaskans-to-observe-respect-life-sunday/

AUSTRALIA: YOUTH MINISTRY CONVENTION: OCT.1-3
Cath News report:
The Australian Catholic Youth Ministry Convention (ACYMC) starts in Melbourne today, where participants will " reflect on the graces and challenges of youth ministry in the church in our country", said Bishop Joseph Grech."It will be a time of formation, prayer, celebration and fellowship," said Bishop Grech, the Australian Catholic Bishops' delegate for youth, in a statement."The theme for the 2010 ACYMC is "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" In youth ministry we are called to help young people seek the answers by sharing with them passionately, constantly and boldly the presence and the teachings of Jesus Christ. This work with the young heart of the church is crucial in fanning the fire of Jesus Christ in our world today.""Having already received 380 registrations for the convention it shows an overwhelming need to gather youth ministers and education professionals from around the nation for formation and networking opportunities," said Senior Youth Ministry Projects Officer, Malcolm Hart."With presentations from bishops and experienced youth ministers from around Australia it will be a great to share and showcase the best of youth ministry in Australia."This year's convention also includes, Dr Bob McCarty, the Executive Director of the National Federation of Catholic Youth Ministry (NFCYM) in the USA. TODAY'S SAINT: GUARDIAN ANGELS: OCT. 2
The Feast of the Guardian AngelsFeast: October 2Information:Feast Day:October 2Not only do believers have faith on their side, but they have "witnesses" of God's Word. Holy Scripture contains

numerous examples that witness to the existence of angels and their manifestations in relation to the fulfillment of particular missions. The well-known example of Mary's Annunciation involved an angel sent by God to announce that the moment had arrived for the fulfillment of the coming of God's Son: He would be conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of Mary as man.Angels were also the witnesses and heralds of Jesus' Resurrection.Sacred Scripture and angelsWith Sacred Scripture as its foundation, the Church affirms the existence of angels and puts into light their mission in relation to collective salvation in history as well as individual salvation. In a Catechesis during the early years of his Pontificate, keeping in mind what is held by tradition, John Paul II affirmed that "the angels, as pure spirits, not only participate in the holiness of God himself, in the manner proper to them, but in the key moments they surround Christ and accompany him in the fulfillment of his salvific mission in regard to mankind" (General Audience, 30 July 1986; L'Osservatore Romano English Edition, 4 August, p. 1).Holiness, therefore, as the fruit of grace and love, is shared by the angels. It is not shared by all, however, for in the beginning there was a rebellion, and those unfaithful to God and his project of salvation were excluded.Without manipulating Scripture, we can say that participation in God's holiness can be understood in relation to the redemptive holiness which springs forth from Christ, by means of and in sight of which the angels were created. Such participation was held in a specific way by the angels.Guardian angelsIn the Catechesis mentioned above, John Paul also affirms that "in the key moments [the angels] surround Christ and accompany him in the fulfilment of his salvific mission in regard to mankind". This is a logical consequence of the aforementioned text.Angels, created by God according to the importance and necessity of each situation, therefore "accompany" and "surround" the Church, the Mystical Body of Christ. In this way the mission is complete, embracing the whole Christ, Head and Body. This dynamic refers not only to the Ecclesial Community as such, but also individual Church members. But as part of the historical and ecclesiological profile it must also be mentioned that angels journey together with the Church in her mission of salvation and at the same time travel side-by-side with her members; all human beings have their own guardian angel to guard, protect and enlighten them. The Catechism of the Catholic Church proclaims that "from infancy to death human life is surrounded by their [angels'] watchful care and intercession. Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life. Already here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and men united in God" (CCC, n. 336).Such protection will benefit those who respond to the Holy Spirit's direction and for those who willingly collaborate. In her liturgy, the Church prays to the angels for herself and others, calling upon their protection and intercession: it is sufficient to follow the liturgy of the Mass to be convinced. The same Church makes the special prayer to the guardian angel available to the faithful and to all who wish to recite it. As a result, praying it at least twice a day, morning and evening, should not be "an option".

TODAY'S GOSPEL: OCT. 2, 2010
Matthew 18: 1 - 5, 101At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?"2And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them,3and said, "Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.4Whoever humbles himself like this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.5"Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me;10"See that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I tell you that in heaven their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven.
