EUROPE
SPAIN: LIST OF PATRON SAINTS FOR WYD 2011

CNA report. The organizers for World Youth Day 2011 have released the list of the patron saints for the event, which “encompasses the history of the Church in Spain, from the first saints of Madrid.”

According to a press release, “The Holy See has confirmed the proposal of the patron saints for World Youth Day (WYD): St. Isidore, St. John of the Cross, St. Maria de la Cabeza, St. John of Avila, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Rose of Lima, St. Ignatius of Loyola, St. Rafael Arnaiz and St. Francis Xavier.”
“The list of the patrons encompasses the history of the Church in Spain, from the first saints of Madrid (St. Isidore and St. Maria), through the founders of the Discalced Carmelites and the Society of Jesus (St. Teresa and St. Ignatius), a great missionary to the East (St. Francis Xavier), the summit of mystic literature (St. John of the Cross), the force behind diocesan priestly spirituality (St. John of Avila), the first saint of Hispanic America (St. Rose of Lima), and a young person from our times (St. Rafael Arnaiz), who was recently canonized,” the statement said.
“All of these saints are of Spanish origin, in order to root WYD in the culture of the host country, as was done at WYD in Cologne, where the saints chosen were related to the Christian history of Germany,” organizers explained.
They also announced the Holy See has confirmed the choice of Cibeles Square, one of Madrid’s most renowned locations, as the place where Pope Benedict XVI will be welcomed by the young people on Thursday, August 18. They added that the vigil and final Mass with the Holy Father will be held at the Cuatro Vientos airfield, where John Paul II met with young people in 2003 during his final visit to the country.

AFRICA
NIGERIA: PRESIDENT YAR´ADUA DIES AFTER ILLNESS

All Africa report: After battling ill-health for about six months, President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua died last night at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja. His remains will be flown to his hometown, Katsina, Katsina State early this morning for burial at 2pm. The 58-year-old Yar'Adua had been battling acute pericaditis, an inflammation of the membrane around the heart, since November last year for which he received treatment at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Presidential Spokesman Olusegun Adeniyi said Yar'Adua died around 9 pm and would be buried today in Katsina. Adeniyi said Yar'Adua's wife Turai was at his side when he died but did not say the cause of his death. Acting President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Patience, were said to have called at the Presidential Villa around 11. 30 pm to condole the First Family.
Among those who rushed to the Presidential Villa immediately the news of the President's death filtered in were Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman, Prince Vincent Ogbulafor, Bauchi State Governor, Isa Yuguda, who is also an in law of the late Yar'Adua, House of Representatives Speaker, Dimeji Bankole and former Minister of Works, Chief Tony Anenih. The late President was brought back to the country under the cover of darkness in February this year and speculations had abounded since then that he was still critically ill. Yar'Adua had been held largely incommunicado since then.
The revelation by the Presidency in November that his ailment was pericaditis had introduced a new dimension to what was usually known to be the late President's medical condition -- a chronic kidney condition for at least 10 years.
The Chief Physician to the President, Dr. Salisu Banye, had said in a terse statement released by Presidential Spokesman Olusegun Adeniyi that the President was diagnosed of having "acute pericarditis".
He had said: "At about 3pm on Friday, November 20, after he returned from the Abuja Central Mosque where he performed the Juma'at prayers, President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua complained of left sided severe chest pain. Preliminary medical examinations suggested Acute Pericarditis (an inflammatory condition of the coverings of the heart).
"It was then decided that he should undertake confirmatory checks at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia where he had had his last medical check-up in August."
His hospitalisation in Saudi Arabia had created political problem in the country because Yar'Adua did not transfer power to his deputy, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, as stipulated by the constitution before he left.
By the time Yar'Adua was hurriedly brought back from Saudi Arabia, the two houses of the National Assembly had passed separate resolutions empowering Jonathan as Acting President on February 9. Even then, Yar'Adua was believed to have been brought back still badly sick as he was flown in an air ambulance.
Since then there has been a ding dong over his health, with Islamic and Christian clerics brought to the Presidential Villa in a bid to lend credence to the fact that he was still alive.

ASIA
INDIA: CHRISTIAN BROTHERS´ SCHOOL FOR CHILDREN OF SEX TRADE

Asia News report: In Bengal’s metropolis, the Irish Christian Brothers run a school where dozens of boys get an education, learn how to live in community and build a better future. Both religious and teachers are enthusiastic about their work.

Kolkata (AsiaNews) – “When I finish my school education, I want to be a teacher,” 12-year-old Kishan Mondal, son of a sex worker, told AsiaNews. “I love to read, write and improve my other talents and grow as a matured and responsible citizen,” he added. All this is possible “thanks to the school opportunities I get here from the Irish Christian brothers”.
Mondal is one of the 45 boys, sons of sex worker mothers who benefit from the ‘Lotus programme’, an educational service run by Irish Christian Brothers in Kolkota’s St Mary’s Day School.
The programme, which targets the children of sex workers, was set up three years ago, Brother Samuel Kullai, programme director, said.
The programme’s main goal is to provide a good education to these children, and make them responsible and mature persons.
“Education and good moral values given with Christian touch can make a difference,” Brother Kullai said. “Too often, many of them could not get an education because their mothers would not send them to school.”
Each morning, at 5 am, a member of the school staff picks up each child who stays in school until 5 pm. Here, they study among other things English, math, science, and Bengali. In addition, they benefit from extracurricular activities and get free breakfast and lunch. Some of older ones also go to government-run schools. In the evening, they are taken home.
“We look after them and make them understand how important their future is. Our mission is to be at their service and help them grow. We love each child as a gift of God,” Brother Kullai said.
“We educate them, and instil in them moral values. Once educated, they can grasp well the values. They are well-behaved and disciplined kids. I enjoy being with them. They are cheerful,” he added.
Religion does not come into the programme because all 45 boys are either Muslim or Hindu. Funding comes benefactors from India and abroad.
Susmita Senapati, one of the three teachers, said that when the children first came to the school, they could neither read nor write, and they had no notion of good manners. After two-three months, they learnt quickly and are now well behaved. “They are active in learning and have learnt social skills that allow them to help each other,” Susmita said.
Rajesh Kumar, a volunteer painting teacher, is also impressed. “I love to teach them pencil paintings/drawings. They are good boys. They are being groomed to be good and responsible people who can integrate themselves in mainstream society and contribute to the common good”.

AUSTRALIA
FUNERAL FOR FORMER RUGBY CHAIRMAN: KEVIN HUMPHREYS

Cath News report: A funeral service will be held today for former Australian Rugby League chairman Kevin Humphreys at the All Hallows Catholic Church in Five Dock.

The Mass will start at noon followed by a private cremation, reports the Campbelltown Macarthur Advertiser.
The father of Wests Tigers' chief executive Stephen Humphreys passed away at a Drummoyne nursing home after a long battle with cancer. He was 80 years old.  Kevin was a prop-forward who played 43 games for the Balmain Tigers during the 1953-1956 seasons and was a highly regarded and successful administrator who oversaw many changes the code experienced in the 1970s and the 80s. He was in charge of the Tigers when they won their famous 1969 premiership victory against South Sydney. Perhaps his greatest legacy was the introduction of State of Origin football, the report said. Tigers' chairman David Trodden said Kevin Humphreys was an "absolute administrative giant of the game".
"Kevin was a visionary who, as an administrator, was well ahead of his time," Trodden said.
"The game and particularly our club are poorer for his passing."
He is survived by wife Joan and sons David and Stephen.

TODAY´S SAINT

St. Eadbert

BISHOP
Feast: May 6
Information: Feast Day: May 6
Born: 7th century England
Died: 6 May 698
Venerable Bede assures us, that this holy man excelled both in the knowledge of the holy scriptures, and in the observance of the divine precepts. All his lifetime he was remarkable for his alms-deeds, and it was a law with him to lay aside yearly the tenth part of his goods for the poor. He was ordained successor to St. Cuthbert, in the see of Lindisfarne, in 687, and most worthily governed that church eleven years. It was his custom twice a year, in Lent, and during forty days before Christmas, to retire into a solitary place, encompassed by the waters of the sea, where St. Cuthbert had for some time served God in private before he went to the isle of Ferne. St. Eadbert spent this time remote from all company, in abstinence, prayers, and tears. St. Cuthbert had been buried about eleven years, when the brethren desired, with the approbation of Eadbert, to take up the bones of that eminent servant of God, whose life had been signalized by many illustrious miracles. Instead of dust, to which they expected they were reduced to their great surprise they found the body as entire, and the joints all as pliable as if it had been living—all the vestments and clothes in which it was laid were also sound, and wonderfully fresh and bright. The monks made haste to inform the holy bishop, who was then in his Lent retreat, and they brought him part of the garments which covered the holy body. These he devoutly kissed, and ordered that the blessed body should be laid in other garments, put into the new coffin which was made for the holy relics, and, for greater veneration, placed above the pavement in the sanctuary. He added, that the grave which had been sanctified by so great a miracle of heavenly grace, would not remain long empty. This was accordingly done, and presently after Eadbert, the bishop beloved of God, fell dangerously sick, and his distemper daily increasing, on the 6th of May following he departed to our Lord. His body was laid in St. Cuthbert's grave, and over the place was deposited the uncorrupted body of that glorious servant of God. "Miracles here wrought from time to time, in curing the sick, bear testimony to the merits of them both," says Bede. The same historian informs us, that St. Eadbert covered with lead the church of Lindisfarne, which was dedicated by the archbishop Theodorus, under the patronage of St. Peter. It had been formerly built by bishop Finan, after the Scottish fashion, of oak boards and thatched with reeds.
