VATICAN : POPE : MAN IS A CREATURE OF GOD
Vatican Radio REPORT: Pope Benedict has sent a message to the Bishop of Rimini, Franesco Lambiasi on the occasion of the 33rd Rimini meeting which begins Sunday. The theme of meeting is, “By nature, Man is relation to the Infinite.”

In his message the Pope writes "to speak of man and his desire to infinity - means first acknowledging his constitutive relationship with the Creator.

Man is a creature of God, yet the Pope adds, "Today this word “creature” appears almost out of fashion: we prefer to think of man as being complete in itself, and master of its own destiny."

The Holy Father goes on to say that despite man trying to escape this fundamental relationship with God, his heart is still in search of the infinite, albeit in the wrong direction. He "begins a frantic search for a sterile and false infinite that leads to dangerous places, "to drugs, sexuality lived in a disorderly manner, success at any cost, and even deceptive forms of religiosity."

"To truly find himself and his identity, recommends Pope Benedict, man must return to recognizing himself as a creature, dependent on God.

In recognition of this dependence, man experiences the joyful discovery that we are children of God linked to the possibility of a truly free and full life. "

ASIA : PAKISTAN : DISABLED CHRISTIAN GIRL ARRESTED FOR BLASPHEMY

ASIA NEWS REPORT:
by Imran Morris
The girl is accused of burning pages from a booklet used to teach Arabic and the Qur'an. Under the Pakistan Penal Code, she could get life in prison. Police saved her from an enraged mob that tried to kill her, but more than 300 families fled their homes fearing more violence. Paul Bhatti calls for calm.

Islamabad (AsiaNews) - For the first time in Pakistan's history, the country's 'black law' has been used against a minor, a disabled 11-year-old Christian girl. Arrested on blasphemy charges, Rimsha Masih, who suffers from Down's syndrome, could get life in prison. Only police intervention saved her from a lynch mob of Muslim extremists. Her case has shocked Islamabad's Christian community, driving hundreds of Christian families from their homes in the girl's neighbourhood fearing possible retaliation. National Harmony Minister Paul Bhatti, a Catholic, has called on Muslim religious leaders to snuff out any source of violence.
The 11-year-old girl, Rimsha Masih, is at the centre of a terrible affair. After being charged with desecrating the Qur'an, she was remanded for 14 days to a juvenile prison in Rawalpindi. The offence comes under Article 295-B of the Pakistan Penal Code and carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.
Witnesses claim that Rimsha, daughter of Misrak Masih, burnt ten pages of the Noorani Qaida, an Islamic booklet used to learn basic Arabic and the Qur'an. She is also said to have put the booklet inside a plastic bag, which she threw into the garbage.
Supposedly, the event occurred on 17 August in Umara Jaffar, a slum in Islamabad's Sector G-12, where the girl lives with her family. Police filed a First Information Report after a Muslim man, Syed Muhammad Ummad, made a formal complaint.
Police took Rimsha Masih into custody under pressure from Muslim extremists. Threatening to take justice in their own hands, a mob of hundreds enraged people attacked the girl's family, trying to lynch her and her mother. Police eventually took the girl away for her own safety, in prison.
Fearing more violence, some 300 families living in the Christian slum fled their homes seeking safety elsewhere. Local sources told AsiaNews that in the area, tensions are running high and that Muslim fundamentalists are threatening to set fire to Christian homes.
National Harmony Minister Paul Bhatti, who is also special advisor to the prime minister on minority affairs, has appealed to Muslim leaders, especially clerics, asking them to help keep the lid on matters to avoid anti-Christian attacks. His brother Shabbaz, Pakistan's first Catholic minister, was murdered by extremists on 2 March 2011 because of this opposition to the 'black law.'
Last month, a mentally disabled Muslim man was burnt alive in Bahawalpur, southern Pakistan, after he was accused of blasphemy and a mob set him on fire for "desecrating the Qur'an."
On the internet, the girl's arrest has caused a wave of protests. Many wonder: "Is this the real Islam?" Others wonder who are the real mental cases, "the girl or those who would punish her" for allegedly breaking the law.
The blasphemy law was introduced in 1986 by General Zia-ul-haq in response to demands by Muslim extremists. Thus far, at least a thousand people have been charged for breaking it. Of these, 60 have died, mostly killed in extrajudicial murders by enraged mobs or individuals.

EUROPE : IRELAND : MARATHON CYCLING FOR WATER

IND. CATH NEWS REPORT:
Cycling for clean water | Angela Docherty, Turkana, New Ways

Angela, in black, with team members
For the fourth year running, Londoner Angela Docherty is taking part in a marathon cycle in Ireland this week, to raise funds for a water project in Kenya.
Angela writes: "As always I am raising funds for New Ways and this year along with the other 12 members of my team we are trying to raise a profit of £20,000 to build an earthpan dam which aims to ensure the long term survival and development potential of the Turkana people by creating a sustainable infrastructure of water resources. The key is to provide clean water for drinking which is necessary for people's survival.
"They depend on their livestock, and are the most vulnerable when the annual rains fail – as they have done more and more often. Each earth dam provides a steady water supply for more than 800 people and their animals directly, leading to improved nutrition, health and hygiene, and reduction of child mortality. Women and girls benefit especially because they are traditionally in charge of water collection for the family, including digging shallow wells in riverbeds. The dam will last for 9-12 months after the rains and will last for more than 25 years so it is a great investment of your hard earned cash…

"This project is important for the Turkana's survival and I will truly appreciate whatever you can give me as it all adds up. Please take five minutes to click onto mydonate page and support this important project.. every penny counts.. (Mydonate charges 15p for debit cards and 1.3% for credit cards and NO commission so more of your money goes to the projects)." (Angela has paid all her own expenses for the trip.)

Video announcement of dedication of archdiocesan shrine

This entrustment to the Holy Family of Nazareth will send a much needed message to the community that family life is something precious to be nurtured and protected, enabling its members to be secure and to flourish; and that the apostolate for marriage and family conducted from the Shrine of the Holy Family will have a broad influence to uphold the integrity of Christian marriage and family life.

It is hoped the apostolate for marriage and family conducted from the Shrine of the Holy Family will promote a full Catholic vision of the theology and practice of marriage and stimulate strong Christian family life in the community.

TODAY'S MASS ONLINE : SUNDAY AUGUST 19,, 2012 - 20TH ORD. TIME - B

Proverbs 9: 1 - 6
1 Wisdom has built her house, she has set up her seven pillars.
2 She has slaughtered her beasts, she has mixed her wine, she has also set her table.
3 She has sent out her maids to call from the highest places in the town,
4 "Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!" To him who is without sense she says,
5 "Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed.
6 Leave simpleness, and live, and walk in the way of insight."
Psalms 34: 2 - 7
2 My soul makes its boast in the LORD; let the afflicted hear and be glad.
3 O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together!
4 I sought the LORD, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears.
5 Look to him, and be radiant; so your faces shall never be ashamed.
6 This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.
7 The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.
Ephesians 5: 15 - 20
15 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise,
16 making the most of the time, because the days are evil.
17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit,
19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart,
20 always and for everything giving thanks in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father.
John 6: 51 - 58
51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live for ever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh."
52 The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?"
53 So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you;
54 he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.
55 For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.
56 He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him.
57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats me will live because of me.
58 This is the bread which came down from heaven, not such as the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live for ever."

TODAY'S SAINT: AUG. 19: ST. JOHN EUDES

Information:
Feast Day:
August 19
Born:
November 14, 1601, Ri, France
Died:
August 19, 1680, Caen, France
Canonized:
1925 by Pope Pius XI
French missionary and founder of the Eudists and of the Congregation of Our Lady of Charity; author of the liturgical worship of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary; b. at Ri, France, 14 Nov., 1601; d. at Caen, 19 Aug., 1680. He was a brother of the French historian, François Eudes de Nézeray. At the age of fourteen he took a vow of chastity. After brilliant studies with the Jesuits at Caen, he entered the Oratory, 25 March, 1623. His masters and models in the spiritual life were Fathers de Bérulle and de Condren. He was ordained priest 20 Dec., 1625, and began his sacerdotal life with heroic labours for the victims of the plague, then ravaging the country. As a missionary, Father Eudes became famous. Since the time of St. Vincent Ferrer, France had probably not seen a greater. He was called by Olier "the prodigy of his age". In 1641 he founded the Congregation of Our Lady of Charity of the Refuge, to provide a refuge for women of ill-fame who wished to do penance. The society was approved by Alexander VII, 2 Jan., 1666. With the approbation of Cardinal de Richelieu and a great number of others, Father Eudes severed his connection with the Oratory to establish the Society of Jesus and Mary for the education of priests and for missionary work. This congregation was founded at Caen, 25 March, 1643, and was considered a most important and urgent work.
Father Eudes, during his long life, preached not less than one hundred and ten missions, three at Paris, one at Versailles, one at St-Germaine-en-Laye, and the others in different parts of France. Normandy was the principal theatre of his apostolic labours. In 1674 he obtained from Clement X six Bulls of indulgences for the Confraternities of the Sacred Heart already erected or to be erected in the seminaries. He also established the Society of the Heart of the Mother Most Admirable -- which resembles the Third Orders of St. Francis and St. Dominic. This society now numbers from 20,000 to 25,000 members. Father Eudes dedicated the seminary chapels of Caen and Coutances to the Sacred Hearts. The feast of the Holy Heart of Mary was celebrated for the first time in 1648, and that of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1672, each as a double of the first class with an octave. The Mass and Office proper to these were composed by Father Eudes, who thus had the honour of preceding the Blessed Margaret Mary in establishing the devotion to the Sacred Hearts. For this reason, Pope Leo XIII, in proclaiming his virtues heroic in 1903, gave him the title of "Author of the Liturgical Worship of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Holy Heart of Mary". Father Eudes wrote a number of books remarkable for elevation of doctrine and simplicity of style. His principal works are:--"Le Royaume de Jésus"; "Le contrat de l'homme avec Dieu par le Saint Baptême"; "Le Mémorial de la vie Ecclésiastique"; "Le Bon Confesseur"; "Le Prédicateur Apostolique"; "Le Cœur Admirable de la Très Sainte Mère de Dieu". This last is the first book ever written on the devotion to the Sacred Hearts. His virtues were declared heroic by Leo XIII, 6 Jan., 1903. The miracles proposed for his beatification were approved by Pius X, 3 May, 1908, and he was beatified 25 April, 1909.
