UCAN REPORT:
Prayer vigil and Mass draw unexpected crowds, says organizer
ucanews.com reporter, Hong Kong

Catholic Church News Image of Catholics rally in support of Bishop Ma
Catholics in Hong Kong recite the rosary aloud in front of the central government’s Liaison Office yesterday
A prayer service and special Mass in support of religious freedom in China drew unexpected crowds yesterday as Catholics rallied in support of a newly ordained bishop.
About 300 people gathered in front of Beijing’s Liaison Office in Hong Kong to recite the Rosary aloud, while an estimated 1,000 crowded into St Margaret’s Church in Happy Valley for Mass.
Patrick Poon, convener of the local diocese’s Justice and Peace Commission’s China Affairs Committee and one of the organizers of the events, said the high turnout showed an increased concern for the Church in China among local Catholics.
Yesterday’s events followed the Vatican-approved ordination on July 7 of Auxiliary Bishop Thaddeus Ma Daqin of Shanghai, who publicly gave up his positions in the government-sanctioned Catholic Patriotic Association (CPA), which is not recognized by the Vatican.
He has since reportedly been confined to the compound of Sheshan seminary and prohibited from assuming his duties as bishop.
“Bishop Ma has become a living example of how the Church is controlled by the CPA. Now more people understand where the problem comes from,” Poon said.
Italian Father Franco Mella said Bishop Ma’s actions could have an important impact on Catholics in China.
“Bishop Ma is probably the first bishop to say openly that he wants more freedom and this will definitely influence Christians in China to express their wishes courageously,” said Fr Mella, a rights activist who has served the poor on the mainland for decades.
Participants in the prayer gathering and the Mass, celebrated by retired Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun of Hong Kong along with 20 other priests, also prayed for parishioners in Heilongjiang province, where Father Joseph Yue Fusheng was illicitly ordained on July 6.
“Some brothers in China have submitted themselves to be slaves, while some others have become corrupted as they fail to withstand temptations,” 80-year-old Cardinal Zen said.
“Many people question why the atheist government intervenes in Church matters,” he added.
He further asked the congregation to “pray for the ones who fell down to rise, the hesitating ones to be strong and the strong ones to hold on straight to the end.”

AFRICA : NIGERIA : PRAYER NEEDED AS ATTACKS INCREASE ON CHRISTIANS

CISA NEWS REPORT:
Christians-Must-Convert’-says-Islamist-Group
JOS, July 13, 2012 (CISA) -Islamist militants have claimed responsibility for the deaths of more than 50 people in north-central Nigeria – and called on the country’s Christians to convert to Islam. Boko Haram spokesman Abu Qaqa issued a statement that the Islamist group carried out the attacks on more than a dozen villages last weekend (June 30 – July 1) and said it will continue to attack the country’s Christians.
According to the statement: “Christians in Nigeria should accept Islam, that is true religion, or they will never have peace.”
“We do not regard them as trusted Christians as some illiterates are campaigning because it was Christians that first declared war on Muslims with the support of government.”
Violence in Plateau state last weekend was blamed on members of the predominantly Muslim Fulani ethnic group, which attacked Christian tribes in the region in March 2010 due to political and social tensions. According to a Red Cross statement issued late Sunday (July 1), aid workers counted 58 dead – but other estimates place the number higher. Press Trust of India reporters stationed in the capital Abuja stated that 135 people were killed.

In the statement Boko Haram thanked God for the massacre: “We praise God in this war for Prophet Mohammed, we thank Allah for the successful attack in Plateau state on Christians and security men”.
Speaking to Aid to the Church in Need last month, Bishop Martin Igwe Uzoukwu Minna said: “If we have to die for Christ, we will die for Christ, but why should we be forced to make the choice?”
Nigeria’s bishops have repeatedly called for Christians not to retaliate – but following the bombing of three churches on 17 June, Muslim shops were targeted by Christians.
Aid to the Church in Need is calling for prayer for Nigeria during this time of crisis. ACN’s spokesperson Patricia Hatton said: “Church sources in the country have alerted us to the scale of the problems faced by Christians in the north. Please remember Nigeria and its Christian community in your prayers – and please pray for peace.”

AMERICA : BRAZIL : 3RD NATIONAL MISSIONARY CONGRESS

Agenzia Fides REPORT - The Third National Missionary Congress of Brazil ended on Sunday, July 15 with a Mass celebrated by the Archbishop of Palmas, His Exc. Mgr. Pedro Brito Guimaraes, and concelebrated by the Secretary General of the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB) and Auxiliary Bishop of Brasilia, His Exc. Mgr. Leonardo Steiner. According to information sent to Agenzia Fides from the National Directorate of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) of Brazil, the Congress, which began on July 12, allowed all participants to experience four days of intense activity, marked by speeches, lectures, testimony and statements by representatives of the Board of missionaries, institutions and organizations related to the missionary world of the CNBB and PMS, both responsible for the evangelization projects in the country.
In addition to the thematic panels that reflect the central theme of the Congress: "Missionary discipleship: from Brazil to a secular and multicultural world in the light of the II Vatican Council", the event gave voice to children and young people, the laity, religious life and ordained ministers who are the protagonists of the evangelizing mission in Brazil and abroad.
All of these realities came together in a common effort to share the progress made so far. Childhood and Missionary Adolescence were able to talk about their experiences and highlighted the preparation for World Youth Day in Rio and Childhood Year to be celebrated in 2013.
Many witnesses shared the work of the lay and religious for the mission ad gentes, facing the challenges of the evangelization of peoples. Many previously unknown places to be evangelized were also discovered, which need missionaries to proclaim the word of God, as in the Amazon, Africa and Haiti. The closing ceremony was celebrated simultaneously in the 17 parishes of Palmas, which hosted over 600 participants at the Missionary Congress. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 17/7/2012)

AUSTRALIA : CARDINAL SPEAKS ON ARMIDALE INQUIRY

Catholic Communications, Sydney Archdiocese REPORT
17 Jul 2012

Cardinal George Pell responds to Armidale Inquiry
Cardinal Pell today welcomed the announcement that the Hon. Antony Whitlam QC, a retired judge of the Federal Court of Australia, has been appointed to conduct the independent inquiry into the case of the ex-priest who was stood down by the Bishop of Armidale in 1992.
The inquiry will look into the processes related to the management of the priest following allegations of sexual abuse in the media.
Cardinal Pell said the Archdiocese of Sydney co-operates fully with police investigations and will do so with any police investigation of the ex-priest "F".
The media reports followed an ABC 4 Corners program including an interview with Cardinal Pell and questions about a meeting with the then "Fr F" and three priests - Msgr Wayne Peters from Armidale, Fr Brian Lucas and Msgr John Usher in Sydney in 1992 and if he made certain admissions about sexual abuse.

Bishop Michael Kennedy
of Armidale Diocese
"I confirm that before being asked about it by ABC 4 Corners, I was not aware of the 1992 meeting with the then -Fr F. I sought details and Monsignor Usher informed me, after contacting Father Lucas and Monsignor Peters, that the recollection of the three priests was that no admission of actual criminal conduct was made at the meeting," Cardinal Pell said in his statement.
He also said the Archdiocese of Sydney, including Father Brian Lucas and Monsignor John Usher as priests of the Archdiocese, will co-operate fully with the inquiry. He added that he continues to encourage victims of sexual abuse to contact the police.
The announcement of the inquiry was made by Bishop Michael Kennedy of the Armidale Diocese and Bishop Anthony Fisher OP of the Parramatta Diocese as "F" was also engaged for a period of time in ministry in the Diocese of Parramatta.

The inquiry is not intended to supplant or replace any investigation that the police or other appropriate authorities may intend to undertake.

Matthew 11: 20 - 24

20 Then he began to upbraid the cities where most of his mighty works had been done, because they did not repent.
21 "Woe to you, Chora'zin! woe to you, Beth-sa'ida! for if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
22 But I tell you, it shall be more tolerable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you.
23 And you, Caper'na-um, will you be exalted to heaven? You shall be brought down to Hades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
24 But I tell you that it shall be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom than for you."

TODAY'S SAINT: JULY 17: BL. MARTYRS OF COMPIEGNE

The Blessed Martyrs of Compiegne
Feast: July 17

Information:
Feast Day: July 7
Died: 17 July 1794 at the Place du Trône Renversé (modern Place de la Nation) in Paris, France
Beatified: 27 May 1906 by Pope Pius X
Guillotined at the Place du Trône Renversé (now called Place de la Nation), Paris, 17 July, 1794. They are the first sufferers under the French Revolution on whom the Holy See has passed judgment, and were solemnly beatified 27 May, 1906. Before their execution they knelt and chanted the "Veni Creator", as at a profession, after which they all renewed aloud their baptismal and religious vows. The novice was executed first and the prioress last. Absolute silence prevailed the whole time that the executions were proceeding. The heads and bodies of the martyrs were interred in a deep sand-pit about thirty feet square in a cemetery at Picpus. As this sand-pit was the receptacle of the bodies of 1298 victims of the Revolution, there seems to be no hope of their relics being recovered. Their names are as follows:
* Madeleine-Claudine Ledoine (Mother Teresa of St. Augustine), prioress, b. in Paris, 22 Sept., 1752, professed 16 or 17 May, 1775;

* Marie-Anne (or Antoinette) Brideau (Mother St. Louis), sub-prioress, b. at Belfort, 7 Dec., 1752, professed 3 Sept, 1771;

* Marie-Anne Piedcourt (Sister of Jesus Crucified), choir-nun, b. 1715, professed 1737; on mounting the scaffold she said "I forgive you as heartily as I wish God to forgive me";

* Anne-Marie-Madeleine Thouret (Sister Charlotte of the Resurrection), sacristan, b. at Mouy, 16 Sept., 1715, professed 19 Aug., 1740, twice sub-prioress in 1764 and 1778;

* Marie-Antoniette or Anne Hanisset (Sister Teresa of the Holy Heart of Mary), b. at Rheims in 1740 or 1742, professed in 1764;

* Marie-Françoise Gabrielle de Croissy (Mother Henriette of Jesus), b. in Paris, 18 June, 1745, professed 22 Feb., 1764, prioress from 1779 to 1785;

* Marie-Gabrielle Trézel (Sister Teresa of St. Ignatius), choir-nun, b. at Compiègne, 4 April, 1743, professed 12 Dec., 1771;

* Rose-Chrétien de la Neuville, widow, choir-nun (Sister Julia Louisa of Jesus), b. at Loreau (or Evreux), in 1741, professed probably in 1777;

* Anne Petras (Sister Mary Henrietta of Providence), choir-nun, b. at Cajarc (Lot), 17 June, 1760, professed 22 Oct., 1786.

* Concerning Sister Euphrasia of the Immaculate Conception accounts vary. Miss Willson says that her name was Marie Claude Cyprienne Brard, and that she was born 12 May, 1736; Pierre, that her name was Catherine Charlotte Brard, and that she was born 7 Sept., 1736. She was born at Bourth, and professed in 1757;

* Marie-Geneviève Meunier (Sister Constance), novice, b. 28 May, 1765, or 1766, at St. Denis, received the habit 16 Dec., 1788. She mounted the scaffold singing "Laudate Dominum". In addition to the above, three lay sisters suffered and two tourières.

The lay sisters are:

* Angélique Roussel (Sister Mary of the Holy Ghost), lay sister, b. at Fresnes, 4 August, 1742, professed 14 May, 1769;

* Marie Dufour (Sister St. Martha), lay sister, b. at Beaune, 1 or 2 Oct., 1742, entered the community in 1772;

* Julie or Juliette Vérolot (Sister St. Francis Xavier), lay sister, b. at Laignes or Lignières, 11 Jan., 1764, professed 12 Jan., 1789.
The two tourières, who were not Carmelites at all, but merely servants of the nunnery were: Catherine and Teresa Soiron, b. respectively on 2 Feb., 1742 and 23 Jan., 1748 at Compiègne, both of whom had been in the service of the community since 1772.
The miracles proved during the process of beatification were
* The cure of Sister Clare of St. Joseph, a Carmelite lay sister of New Orleans, when on the point of death from cancer, in June, 1897;

* The cure of the Abbé Roussarie, of the seminary at Brive, when at the point of death, 7 March, 1897;

* The cure of Sister St. Martha of St. Joseph, a Carmelite lay Sister of Vans, of tuberculosis and an abcess in the right leg, 1 Dec., 1897;

* The cure of Sister St. Michael, a Franciscan of Montmorillon, 9 April, 1898.
Five secondary relics are in the possession of the Benedictines of Stanbrook, Worcestershire.
