TODAY'S SAINT: JULY 17: BL. MARTYRS OF COMPIEGNE

Vatican Radio report: Pope Francis sends message of support for human life to Catholics in Ireland, Scotland and England and Wales. Below is a communique from the Bishops 'Conference of England and Wales (CBCEW) attached with the Pope's message signed by Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone. (Image share Google)
In a special message to Catholics across Britain and Ireland, ahead of the annual Day for Life, Pope Francis has emphasised the need to care for life from conception to natural end.
In his message, he says that all life has inestimable value ‘even the weakest and most vulnerable, the sick, the old, the unborn and the poor, are masterpieces of God’s creation, made in his own image, destined to live for ever, and deserving of the utmost reverence and respect’.
He has promised his prayers that ‘Day for Life will help to ensure that human life always receives the protection that it is due.‘
Over half-a-million leaflets have been sent to parishes in England and Wales in readiness for Day for Life Sunday (28 July). The theme of the Day is ‘Care for Life – It’s Worth It’ taken from a homily preached by Cardinal Bergoglio in 2005 during a Mass in honour of the protector of Pregnant Women, Saint Raymond Nonnatus.
Within this homily, the now Pope Francis said: “All of us must care for life, cherish life, with tenderness, warmth...to give life is to open (our) heart, and to care for life is to (give oneself) in tenderness and warmth for others, to have concern in my heart for others.
Caring for life from the beginning to the end. What a simple thing, what a beautiful thing..So, go forth and don’t be discouraged. Care for life. It’s worth it.”
This year’s Day for Life focuses on care for unborn children and their mothers; care for people who are elderly and care for those who are suicidal and their families. One of its key aims is to build an environment of compassion and care that nurtures and sustains life, even in the most challenging of human events and personal circumstances.
Day for Life is celebrated annually by the Catholic Church in Ireland, Scotland and England and Wales. The proceeds of the Day for Life collection to be held in parishes in England and Wales assist the work of the Anscombe Bioethics Centre and other life related activities supported by the Church.

Text of the Message from Pope Francis to Catholics in Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales
“Calling to mind the teaching of Saint Irenaeus that the glory of God is seen in a living human being, the Holy Father encourages all of you to let the light of that glory shine so brightly that everyone may come to recognise the inestimable value of all human life. Even the weakest and most vulnerable, the sick, the old, the unborn and the poor, are masterpieces of God’s creation, made in his own image, destined to live for ever, and deserving of the utmost reverence and respect. His Holiness prays that the Day for Life will help to ensure that human life always receives the protection that is its due, so that “everything that breathes may praise the Lord” (Psalm 150:6).”

The day for life in Scotland England and Wales is marked on Sunday 28th July, while is Ireland it is celebrated on Sunday October 6th.

NEW GOVERNMENT ENTERS AS VIOLENCE CONTINUES IN STREETS OF EGYPT

ASIA NEWS IT REPORT:
33 Interim Ministers include 3 women, 3 Christians and a football star. General al-Sisi holds Defence portfolio and becomes deputy prime minister. The Islamists march demanding the return of Morsi, overnight clashes produce 2 more victims and more than 400 arrests.

Cairo (AsiaNews) - Three women, three Christians, a football star and not a single Islamist: 33 new ministers of the interim government of Egypt are a sign of "national reconciliation" desired by the executive born in the wake of Mohamed Morsi's ouster. This is according to Ahmed el Moslemani, presidential spokesperson, who was speaking immediately after the ceremony, broadcast on state television, during which the transitional executive took office ahead of a new round of elections.

The Finance Ministry went to Ahmad Galal, an experienced economist who worked for years at the World Bank; Foreign Affairs went to the former Egyptian ambassador to Washington Nabil Fahmy; the Interior Ministry remains with Mohamed Ibrahim, as is the case with Osama Saleh, who returns to the post of Minister of Investments, a position he held until May of this year.  The same is the case for the Minister of Tourism Hisham Zaazou. General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi - who led the army in the removal of former President Morsi - keeps the Defense portfolio and becomes deputy prime minister.

The three women ministers in the new Egyptian government, led by Hazem el Beblawi, are Doriya Sharaf el Dine, who has been appointed to the Ministry for Information; Laila Rashed Iskandar to the Environment and Maha Zeneddin (a Coptic) to Healthcare. The other two Christians are Mounir Fakhry Abdel Nour who has been given Trade and Industry and Ramsi George appointed to Scientific Research.

The new Egyptian Minister of Sports, Taher abuzeid, was instead an Egyptian soccer star: center forward of the most prestigious El Ahly Egyptian team, in the 80s he was a famous striker dubbed the "Maradona of the Nile" . He holds 59 caps with the Egyptian national team and was also summoned for the World Cup in Italy in 1990. He stopped playing in 1996.

There are no Muslim Brotherhood or Salafi representatives in the new government.  The Brotherhood spokesman Mahmoud Ghozlan, described the new government as "illegitimate" and the appintment of the President Adly Mansour as "null." However, several sources confirm that "discussions are ongoing" between the Presidency and the Islamic party, which continues to demand the return of Morsi to power.

While the government was being sworn in, clashes between the supporters of the former president and law enforcement officers continued on the streets. Before dawn more than 400 arrests were confirmed, but two people were killed in the violence and an additional 176 were injured. Among them, there are 3 soldiers and 14 police officers.

WORLD YOUTH DAY PILGRIMS FROM AUSTRALIA ARRIVE IN SOUTH AMERICA

Catholic Communications, Sydney Archdiocese REPORT
17 Jul 2013

Bishop Peter Comensoli (front row far right) and the WYD group he is leading outside the St Rosa of Lima Sancturary & Church in Peru
Sydney's 1800 pilgrims including youth leaders, priests, religious and bishops have arrived in South America!  Many of them, including the group led by Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal George Pell have now embarked on a five-day outreach mission in Lima's desperately poor shantytowns as part of their preparation for World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro which begins in six days time.
Groups of WYD pilgrims began flying out of Sydney last weekend with His Eminence and the 72 members of the group he is leading, boarding their flight to Lima yesterday morning.
For many the journey took more than 26 hours with some groups having to wait 10 hours in transit at Chile's international airport in Santiago to make the connecting flights to Peru.
Despite the jetlag, the young people along with those travelling with them, touched down in Peru  brimming with energy, enthusiasm and a determination to make a real difference to people's lives as part of their immersion experience in the lead up to World Youth Day in Rio.
"While we are here in Lima we are staying at a peaceful and beautiful retreat house run by the Sisters of San Jose of Cluny," Selina Hasham, Chair of the Australian Bishops Conference's National World Youth Day Committee wrote on her blog to Xt3.com this morning. Selina explained that each morning for the next five days, Sydney's WYD pilgrims and group leaders including His Eminence, Cardinal George Pell, will travel from the Retreat House to the outskirts of Lima to the favelas as the shanty towns on the periphery of the city are known.

Bishop Anthony Fisher OP and WYD pilgrims from Paramatta are building and painting houses for the poor in Lima, Peru
For the 450 strong contingent of student pilgrims in Years 10 and 11 from Sydney's 149 Catholic schools along with group leaders, staff and members of the Archdiocese of Sydney's Catholic Education Office (CEO) there was no sign of flagging spirits despite an epic journey during which many were awake for two days straight.
"We touched down at Santiago Airport at around 10.00am local time which is midnight Sydney time after a 12 hour flight," Mark Rix, Head of Communications at CEO blogged late yesterday, saying that despite the time difference and long flight, everyone was in great spirits.
"A few are sleeping in the seats but most of the students are talking or laughing or taking photos or mucking around with their phones. A small group of girls have just finished synchronized dance moves to a Beyonce song," he wrote on the CEO blog, adding that for some in the group including himself there was going to be a 10-hour wait in transit until the connecting to a flight to Lima, while others would be leaving four hours earlier.
"Lucky them. They will be checked in and maybe even asleep by the time we arrive at our hotel," he blogged.
But by this morning Mark was ruefully confessing that despite the 10 hour wait in transit he had missed the connecting flight to Peru.

WYD pilgrims pray quietly in the Lima Retreat House where they are staying
"Stupid is as stupid does. So let's call it for what it is. I am an idiot," he announced on his blog today explaining  that he'd thought he was on the same flight as some of his colleagues - as the departures were around the same time.
"I also thought there were three flights. But in fact there were four," he added.
At the last minute after much cajoling he managed to catch the last seat on a later flight but by that time his luggage was on another plane leaving Mark wondering if he would have any clothes other than what he stood up in for the next five days in Lima, not to mention the following six days in Rio for World Youth Day.
Luckily Michael Hollis who is leading one of the CEO groups retrieved Mark's luggage from the Lima airport roundabout and had it taken to the hotel where it was waiting for Mark when he arrived at the group's hotel at 1.30 am this next morning.
Now rested, the groups of students from Sydney's Catholic schools will join the Archdiocese of Sydney pilgrims, travelling to Lima's favelas each day where the focus of the outreach mission is to build a series of concrete paths and stairways for the men, women and children who live there.
"We've been told by the Christian Life Movement who are preparing for our visit that the Peruvian Government only regards areas as viable for important infrastructure such as sewers, water mains and electricity, if the town has viable concrete paths and walkways," Selina explains.

Jet lagged but still full of energy WYD pilgrims share first meal at Retreat House in Lima
The construction of the paths and stairways will also offer safety to the men, women and children of these slum towns where houses are no more than makeshift shacks of scraps of corrugated iron, plywood strips and whatever else can be salvaged.
"There is scant rainfall and almost no trees on these hillsides which are steep and littered with rubble. With no paths or stairs the climb to find water or wood for heating is perilous particularly for the elderly and young children," Selina says.
The CEO group will also spend one day with the children of the shanty towns where they will bus them into the city, give them lessons in dental hygiene and health and then take them to one of the city's sports grounds so that they can enjoy games of soccer in safety and on a proper field.
For the 62 WYD pilgrims travelling with Bishop Peter Comensoli, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Sydney, Lima meant a day's stop over before heading to Cuzco, high in the Andes where they will work with the poor and spend a day visiting the ancient ruins of the 15th Century Incan empire city of Machu Picchu.

The Retreat House run by the Sisters of San Jose of Cluny will be home for Cardinal Pell and many Sydney WYD pilgrims during their time in Peru
However there was time yesterday for Bishop Comensoli to lead the group on a tour of the famous Cathedral of Lima and the Sanctuary and Church of St Rose of Lima, patron saint of South America and the first person born in the New World to be canonised.
Also working in Lima's shanty towns is a team of young pilgrims from the Diocese of Parramatta led by the Bishop of Parramatta, the Most Rev Anthony Fisher OP.  Arriving in Lima on Monday, the Parramatta contingent have already begun their mission and are working with Caritas South America to build and paint 10 houses for the poor.
"Last night I returned home with five young people covered in paint," Bishop Anthony wrote on the WYD - Catholic Diocese of Parramatta blog this morning, and recounted "the wonderful experience" of visiting the toddlers and their teachers in Lima's El Augustino shanty town preschool where the group is building the houses as well as meeting with the local priest in his "tiny poor chapel" and with the families who will ultimately live in the houses the young pilgrims are helping to construct.

Wednesday of the Fifteenth Week in Ordinary Time
Lectionary: 391

Reading 1               EX 3:1-6, 9-12

Moses was tending the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian.
Leading the flock across the desert, he came to Horeb,
the mountain of God.
There an angel of the LORD appeared to him in fire
flaming out of a bush.
As he looked on, he was surprised to see that the bush,
though on fire, was not consumed.
So Moses decided,
“I must go over to look at this remarkable sight,
and see why the bush is not burned.”

When the LORD saw him coming over to look at it more closely,
God called out to him from the bush, “Moses! Moses!”
He answered, “Here I am.”
God said, “Come no nearer!
Remove the sandals from your feet,
for the place where you stand is holy ground.
I am the God of your father,” he continued,
“the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob.
The cry of the children of Israel has reached me,
and I have truly noted that the Egyptians are oppressing them.
Come, now! I will send you to Pharaoh to lead my people,
the children of Israel, out of Egypt.”

But Moses said to God,
“Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh
and lead the children of Israel out of Egypt?”
He answered, “I will be with you;
and this shall be your proof that it is I who have sent you:
when you bring my people out of Egypt,
you will worship God on this very mountain.”

Responsorial Psalm                   PS 103:1B-2, 3-4, 6-7

R. (8a) The Lord is kind and merciful.
Bless the LORD, O my soul;
and all my being, bless his holy name.
Bless the LORD, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits.
R. The Lord is kind and merciful.
He pardons all your iniquities,
he heals all your ills.
He redeems your life from destruction,
he crowns you with kindness and compassion.
R. The Lord is kind and merciful.
The LORD secures justice
and the rights of all the oppressed.
He has made known his ways to Moses,
and his deeds to the children of Israel.
R. The Lord is kind and merciful.

Gospel      MT 11:25-27

At that time Jesus exclaimed:
“I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,
for although you have hidden these things
from the wise and the learned
you have revealed them to the childlike.
Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will.
All things have been handed over to me by my Father.
No one knows the Son except the Father,
and no one knows the Father except the Son
and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.”

TODAY'S SAINT: JULY 17: BL. MARTYRS OF COMPIEGNE

The Blessed Martyrs of Compiegne
Feast: July 17

Information:
Feast Day:July 7
Died:17 July 1794 at the Place du Trône Renversé (modern Place de la Nation) in Paris, France
Beatified:27 May 1906 by Pope Pius X
Guillotined at the Place du Trône Renversé (now called Place de la Nation), Paris, 17 July, 1794. They are the first sufferers under the French Revolution on whom the Holy See has passed judgment, and were solemnly beatified 27 May, 1906. Before their execution they knelt and chanted the "Veni Creator", as at a profession, after which they all renewed aloud their baptismal and religious vows. The novice was executed first and the prioress last. Absolute silence prevailed the whole time that the executions were proceeding. The heads and bodies of the martyrs were interred in a deep sand-pit about thirty feet square in a cemetery at Picpus. As this sand-pit was the receptacle of the bodies of 1298 victims of the Revolution, there seems to be no hope of their relics being recovered. Their names are as follows:
* Madeleine-Claudine Ledoine (Mother Teresa of St. Augustine), prioress, b. in Paris, 22 Sept., 1752, professed 16 or 17 May, 1775;

* Marie-Anne (or Antoinette) Brideau (Mother St. Louis), sub-prioress, b. at Belfort, 7 Dec., 1752, professed 3 Sept, 1771;

* Marie-Anne Piedcourt (Sister of Jesus Crucified), choir-nun, b. 1715, professed 1737; on mounting the scaffold she said "I forgive you as heartily as I wish God to forgive me";

* Anne-Marie-Madeleine Thouret (Sister Charlotte of the Resurrection), sacristan, b. at Mouy, 16 Sept., 1715, professed 19 Aug., 1740, twice sub-prioress in 1764 and 1778;

* Marie-Antoniette or Anne Hanisset (Sister Teresa of the Holy Heart of Mary), b. at Rheims in 1740 or 1742, professed in 1764;

* Marie-Françoise Gabrielle de Croissy (Mother Henriette of Jesus), b. in Paris, 18 June, 1745, professed 22 Feb., 1764, prioress from 1779 to 1785;

* Marie-Gabrielle Trézel (Sister Teresa of St. Ignatius), choir-nun, b. at Compiègne, 4 April, 1743, professed 12 Dec., 1771;

* Rose-Chrétien de la Neuville, widow, choir-nun (Sister Julia Louisa of Jesus), b. at Loreau (or Evreux), in 1741, professed probably in 1777;

* Anne Petras (Sister Mary Henrietta of Providence), choir-nun, b. at Cajarc (Lot), 17 June, 1760, professed 22 Oct., 1786.

* Concerning Sister Euphrasia of the Immaculate Conception accounts vary. Miss Willson says that her name was Marie Claude Cyprienne Brard, and that she was born 12 May, 1736; Pierre, that her name was Catherine Charlotte Brard, and that she was born 7 Sept., 1736. She was born at Bourth, and professed in 1757;

* Marie-Geneviève Meunier (Sister Constance), novice, b. 28 May, 1765, or 1766, at St. Denis, received the habit 16 Dec., 1788. She mounted the scaffold singing "Laudate Dominum". In addition to the above, three lay sisters suffered and two tourières.

The lay sisters are:

* Angélique Roussel (Sister Mary of the Holy Ghost), lay sister, b. at Fresnes, 4 August, 1742, professed 14 May, 1769;

* Marie Dufour (Sister St. Martha), lay sister, b. at Beaune, 1 or 2 Oct., 1742, entered the community in 1772;

* Julie or Juliette Vérolot (Sister St. Francis Xavier), lay sister, b. at Laignes or Lignières, 11 Jan., 1764, professed 12 Jan., 1789.
The two tourières, who were not Carmelites at all, but merely servants of the nunnery were: Catherine and Teresa Soiron, b. respectively on 2 Feb., 1742 and 23 Jan., 1748 at Compiègne, both of whom had been in the service of the community since 1772.
The miracles proved during the process of beatification were
* The cure of Sister Clare of St. Joseph, a Carmelite lay sister of New Orleans, when on the point of death from cancer, in June, 1897;

* The cure of the Abbé Roussarie, of the seminary at Brive, when at the point of death, 7 March, 1897;

* The cure of Sister St. Martha of St. Joseph, a Carmelite lay Sister of Vans, of tuberculosis and an abcess in the right leg, 1 Dec., 1897;

* The cure of Sister St. Michael, a Franciscan of Montmorillon, 9 April, 1898.
Five secondary relics are in the possession of the Benedictines of Stanbrook, Worcestershire.
