POPE FRANCIS PRAYS FOR WYD VICTIMS AND LATEST FROM VATICAN

ACCIDENT ON A WYD BUS NEAR KOUROU, FRENCH GUIANA: TELEGRAM FROM THE POPE
Vatican City, 18 July 2013 (VIS) – Given below is the text of a telegram of condolences sent in the Holy Father's name by Cardinal Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone S.D.B. to the bishop of Cayenne, in response to news of a serious road accident yesterday near Kourou, French Guiana, involving a bus carrying pilgrims to next week's World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The accident caused one death, and left five other victims seriously injured.
“Pope Francis, informed of the tragic road accident on the road to Saint Laurent du Maroni involving a bus carrying young people participating in World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro, wishes to express his heartfelt participation in the mourning of the families of the deceased, and of the group leaders and organisers. The Pope assures them of his prayers and expresses his deepest sympathy with those injured, the rescue workers and all those around them. The Holy Father wishes to impart the comfort of an apostolic blessing on all those touched by this tragedy”.
MODENA: PRAYER VIGIL FOR THE VICTIMS OF MIGRATION, IN COMMUNION WITH POPE FRANCIS' VISIT TO LAMPEDUSA
Vatican City, 18 July 2013 (VIS) – Tonight the Italian city of Modena will hold a prayer vigil in the Church of Pomposa for the victims of migration. The vigil has been organised by the diocese of Modena-Nonantola, “in communion with Pope Francis' visit to Lampedusa”.
During his visit to the island on 8 July, the Holy Father said “we beg forgiveness for our indifference to so many of our brothers and sisters. Father, we ask your pardon for those who are complacent and closed amid comforts which have deadened their hearts; we beg your forgiveness for those who by their decisions on the global level have created situations that lead to these tragedies”.
A communique issued by the archdiocese states: “Welcoming Pope Francis' spirit of forgiveness and compassion, we invite all citizens of Modena, both natives to the city and immigrants, to a moment of prayer for the victims of the crossings of hope in the Mediterranean Sea, and the other routes that are taken by many people seeking refuge from war, persecution, discrimination and environmental disasters”.
FOURTH AMERICAN MISSIONARY CONGRESS: DISCIPLES IN A MULTICULTURAL WORLD
Vatican City, 18 July 2013 (VIS) – The Fourth American Missionary Congress (Ninth Missionary Congress of Latin America) has been convened for this autumn (26 November – 1 December) by the Venezuelan Episcopal Conference and the Pontifical Mission for the archdiocese of Maracaibo, where the meeting will be held. The theme will be "Missionary disciples of Jesus Christ in a secular and multicultural world" and four thousand missionaries from all over the continent are expected to attend.AN
The American Missionary Congresses, explains the site dedicated to the event, “are marked by the need to provide missionary forces of the continent a favourable space to share and promote reflection, spirituality and missionary experiences. Their purpose is to renew the necessary and permanent commitment of the Church in Latin America, called to fulfil the mission of the Lord beyond geographical, cultural and religious differences”.
With the slogan “Missionary America, share your faith”, twenty-two forums have also been organised, led by experts who will discuss, among other issues: missionary childhood and adolescence, subject and future of the mission; the challenge of youth cultures to the mission of the Church; the inculturation of the liturgy; evangelisation and political ideas; the protection of creation; the missionary challenge of human mobility; the centrality of the Word of God to the mission of the Church; dialogue and proclamation to non-believers; the proclamation of Jesus Christ in Afro-American and indigenous cultures; popular religiosity, a way to evangelisation; evangelising urban cultures: from the temple to the house; and mission and ecumenism.

TWITTER YOUR WAY TO HEAVEN ? - WHAT POPE FRANCIS ACTUALLY MEANT

A Storm of media posts have made some exaggerated claims about following the Pope on Twitter and gaining indulgences.
Some headlines

"A Ticket to Heaven on Twitter..."

"One hell of a deal: Pope Francis offers reduced time in Purgatory"

"Vatican offers 'time off purgatory' to followers of Pope Francis tweets ..."

Text from the Vatican Blog release:
The young people and the faithful who are adequately prepared will obtain the Plenary Indulgence, once a day and under the usual conditions (sacramental Confession, Eucharistic communion and prayer in accordance with the intentions of the Holy Father), applicable also to the souls of deceased faithful.
The faithful who on account of a legitimate impediment cannot attend the aforementioned celebrations may obtain Plenary Indulgence under the usual spiritual, sacramental and prayer conditions, in a spirit of filial submission to the Roman Pontiff, by participation in the sacred functions on the days indicated, following the same rites and spiritual exercises as they occur via television or radio or, with due devotion, via the new means of social communication.
Partial Indulgence will be conceded to all the faithful who, in any place and between the indicated days, with a contrite heart raise devout prayers to God, concluding with the official prayer of the World Youth Day and invoking the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Brazil, with the title “Nossa Senhora da Conceicao Aparecida” as well as other patrons and intercessors of the same meeting, that they may encourage the young to reinforce their faith and lead a holy life.
What this actually means is that the faithful who participate with the World Youth Day pilgrims on social media can obtain a plenary indulgence. However, it is necessary to be in the state of grace, go to communion, go to confession and say certain prayers.

SYRIAN OFFICIAL KILLED IN LEBANON BY GUNMEN

ASIA NEWS REPORT
Gunmen open fire and kill Mohammad Darrar Jamo as he returned home. His wife, who was with him, was unharmed. Head of the Political and International Relations Division of the International Organisation for Arab Immigrants, he was a known supporter of the Syrian regime.

Beirut (AsiaNews/Agencies) - Syria's crisis continues to destabilise Lebanon. Unknown gunmen killed a senior Syrian official in front of his home in Sarafand, southern Lebanon.
Mohammed Darrar Jamo headed the Political and International Relations Division of the International Organisation for Arab Immigrants. He was killed instantly, but his wife, who was with him at the time of the shooting, escaped unharmed, Lebanese sources report.
Darrar had frequently appeared as a political expert on Arabic-language television channels, defending President Assad.

His death comes as the war in Syria continues to destabilise neighbouring Lebanon. Two days ago, a convoy carrying members of the Lebanese Shia militant group Hizbollah was hit by a roadside bomb near the Syrian border, killing one person and wounding two others.

The remains of William Shakespeare lie in front of the altar.
Other than my boyhood Church – Mirfield Parish – it is the Church in which I have spent most time and because the remains of William Shakespeare lie in front of the altar. The building and William Shakespeare gave me comfort, calm and inspiration.

TODAY'S MASS ONLINE : THURS. JULY 18, 2013

Thursday of the Fifteenth Week in Ordinary Time
Lectionary: 392

Reading 1               EX 3:13-20

Moses, hearing the voice of the LORD from the burning bush, said to him,
“When I go to the children of Israel and say to them,
‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’
if they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what am I to tell them?”
God replied, “I am who am.”
Then he added, “This is what you shall tell the children of Israel:
I AM sent me to you.”

God spoke further to Moses, “Thus shall you say to the children of Israel:
The LORD, the God of your fathers,
the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob,
has sent me to you.

“This is my name forever;
this my title for all generations.

“Go and assemble the elders of Israel, and tell them:
The LORD, the God of your fathers,
the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,
has appeared to me and said:
I am concerned about you
and about the way you are being treated in Egypt;
so I have decided to lead you up out of the misery of Egypt
into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites,
Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites,
a land flowing with milk and honey.

“Thus they will heed your message.
Then you and the elders of Israel
shall go to the king of Egypt and say to him:
“The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, has sent us word.
Permit us, then, to go a three-days’ journey in the desert,
that we may offer sacrifice to the LORD, our God.

“Yet I know that the king of Egypt will not allow you to go
unless he is forced.
I will stretch out my hand, therefore,
and smite Egypt by doing all kinds of wondrous deeds there.
After that he will send you away.”

Responsorial Psalm     PS 105:1 AND 5, 8-9, 24-25, 26-27

R. (8a) The Lord remembers his covenant for ever.
or:
R. Alleluia.
Give thanks to the LORD, invoke his name;
make known among the nations his deeds.
Recall the wondrous deeds that he has wrought,
his portents, and the judgments he has uttered.
R. The Lord remembers his covenant for ever.
or:
R. Alleluia.
He remembers forever his covenant
which he made binding for a thousand generations—
Which he entered into with Abraham
and by his oath to Isaac.
R. The Lord remembers his covenant for ever.
or:
R. Alleluia.
He greatly increased his people
and made them stronger than their foes,
Whose hearts he changed, so that they hated his people,
and dealt deceitfully with his servants.
R. The Lord remembers his covenant for ever.
or:
R. Alleluia.
He sent Moses his servant;
Aaron, whom he had chosen.
They wrought his signs among them,
and wonders in the land of Ham.
R. The Lord remembers his covenant for ever.
or:
R. Alleluia.

Gospel                MT 11:28-30

Jesus said:
“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened,
and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,
for I am meek and humble of heart;
and you will find rest for yourselves.
For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”

TODAY'S SAINT: JULY 18: ST. BRUNO OF SEGNI

St. Bruno of Segni
BENEDICTINE BISHOP
Feast: July 18
Benedictine bishop, serving as Vatican librarian and cardinal legate. Born in Asti (Solero), Italy, in 1049, Bruno became a Benedictine while still young, and in 1079, Pope St. Gregory VII (r. 1073 - 1085) appointed him bishop of Segni. He left that see to reenter the monastic-life, becoming the abbot of Monte Cassino. Burno served as librarian to the Holy Roman See and as cardinal legate. Bruno's theologial work on the Holy Eucharist set the standard for centuries. He was canonized in 1183.
